From Composer to Singer
Stepped into the spotlight as a vocalist with "Bambara Pahasa," a composition of his own. The opportunity came unexpectedly when the singer originally selected to record the song was unavailable.
Taking on the vocal performance himself transformed what was initially an unexpected situation into a defining moment. The recording introduced audiences to another dimension of his artistry and marked the beginning of his journey as a recognised singer.
1988Bambara Pahasa
The Album That Shaped a New Identity
Released the Bambara Pahasa album, marking an important stage in the transition from composer to recording artist. The album brought together his abilities as a composer, vocalist and musical creator, helping establish a distinctive artistic identity.
Its success helped introduce his music to a much broader audience and contributed to the growing popularity of his style during an important period in the development of Sinhala popular music.
1992Diganthaye
A Musical Journey Beyond Borders
Released Digantaye, building further on the success of his earlier recordings. The album became another significant milestone, showcasing his continuing development as a composer and recording artist.
The title track gained attention beyond Sri Lanka and was reported to have appeared on Radio Express's World Chart Show in Los Angeles. This achievement represented an important moment in the international exposure of his music and demonstrated the potential for Sinhala popular music to reach audiences beyond the island.
1993Ru Sanda Rae
The Beginning of an Iconic Concert Journey
Launched the Ru Sanda Rae concert series at the Elphinstone Theatre in Colombo, alongside Chandralekha. The production brought together music, live performance and the artistic chemistry between the two performers.
What began as a concert series in Sri Lanka eventually travelled to international audiences, becoming one of the most recognisable live-performance projects associated with Rookantha and Chandralekha. Ru Sanda Rae would become an important part of their shared musical legacy.
1993Industry Firsts & Cultural Impact
First Brand Ambassador for Coca-Cola in Sri Lanka
Made Sri Lankan pop history in 1993 by becoming the first local musical artist signed as an official brand ambassador for Coca-Cola. The partnership launched the "Coca-Cola Rookantha Gee Senakeliya" concert series - a landmark nationwide tour and outdoor music festival that brought live stadium-level pop concerts to tens of thousands of fans across major cities, setting a new benchmark for corporate sponsorship in the local music industry.
The iconic live shows featured backing music by the famous Sunflowers Band, blending Rookantha's modern electronic synth sound with vibrant live instrumentation. The campaign also integrated mass-market promotion - television commercials, radio spots and collectible merchandise - proving Sri Lankan pop stars could anchor major corporate partnerships.
1990sInternational Chapter
Taking the Music to the World
Entered an important international chapter of his career, continuing to perform with Chandralekha for Sri Lankan audiences living overseas.
Their concerts brought familiar Sinhala songs to audiences across international destinations and helped maintain a strong cultural connection between Sri Lankan communities abroad and the music of their homeland. 1994Sarasaviya Recognition
Honoured for His Contribution to Cinema
Received the Sarasaviya Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his contribution to the film Saptha Kanya.
The prestigious recognition acknowledged his ability to translate his musical and vocal talents into Sinhala cinema. It also represented an important achievement in a career that was increasingly extending beyond popular recordings into film music. 1996Another Sarasaviya Award
Continuing Recognition on the Silver Screen
Received the Sarasaviya Award for Best Male Playback Singer for Chitti, earning the prestigious honour for a second time.
The consecutive recognition demonstrated his continued presence and versatility within Sinhala film music. Alongside his success as a recording artist and composer, his work as a playback singer had become an important part of his artistic contribution.
2009Live at Stadium
A Night That Drew Thousands
The Rookantha–Chandralekha Live at Stadium concert became another major milestone in their live-performance journey. Held at Sugathadasa Stadium, the event brought their music to a large-scale concert setting.
The performance reportedly attracted an audience of more than 15,000 people, reflecting the remarkable popularity and enduring connection they had built with their listeners. An example of the scale and impact of their live performances.
2017–2019Mentoring the Next Generation
Sharing Experience with Emerging Artists
Joined the judging panel of Youth with Talent – Generation Next, entering a new phase of his career in which experience and mentorship became central to his public role. Working alongside other established figures from Sri Lanka's entertainment industry, he became part of a platform focused on discovering and encouraging new musical talent.
In 2019, he joined Hiru Star as a judge, bringing decades of experience in composition, singing, recording and live performance to one of Sri Lanka's prominent televised singing competitions. Engaging directly with aspiring singers and assessing their performances from the perspective of an experienced artist.
2025Tribute Award
A Legacy Celebrated
Received a Tribute Award at the 2025 Popular Awards, recognising his decades-long contribution to Sinhala music and cinema.
The honour represents recognition of a career that has encompassed composition, songwriting, singing, film music, live concerts and television. Across these different chapters, his work has remained closely connected with generations of Sinhala music listeners, and the tribute marked a celebration of the lasting influence of his musical catalogue.
